Why We Give Kids a 3% Royalty (And Why That's More Than It Sounds)

Zoey, age 7, wearing a jacket printed with her own stick figure drawing, standing next to her grandfather who is wearing a matching apron in the kitchen.
Zoey drew this at age 7. Her grandpa wears it in the kitchen. She wears it to school. Strangers buy it too.

My daughter drew a stick figure at age 7. She called it "Love". She said she loves her family.

That drawing is now on aprons, jackets, and tees. Her grandpa wears it in the kitchen. She wears it on her jacket to school. And strangers, people who have never met her, buy it too.

It is her highest earning drawing on pixyit.

I tell this story because parents often ask me the same question: "Why is the royalty only 3%? That sounds too low."

It is a fair question. And I want to answer it honestly.

What 3% Actually Means

When you see "3% royalty", it is easy to compare it to 100% and feel like your child is getting a bad deal. But that comparison is missing something important: costs.

Every product on pixyit goes through manufacturing, printing, quality checks, shipping, and platform operations before it reaches a customer. We also personally test every product before it goes into our shop, and our team designs and reviews each order to make sure the artwork looks great on the final item. Quality matters to us, and we only add products to our shop that we are proud to put a child's artwork on. By the time all of that is covered, the 3% of the product price that goes to your child is actually around 10% of what pixyit makes.

We also donate 5% of every order to youth nonprofits. That donation is about 23% of our profit.

Together, we put roughly a third of our earnings back into kids and communities with every single order.

We keep the rest because pixyit needs to grow to keep doing this. We are a for-profit company that is built to do good, and our goal is to become a B-Corp, a globally recognized certification for businesses that meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact. A company that cannot sustain itself cannot sustain its mission.

Your Child Draws Once. They Could Earn for Years.

Here is the part that surprises most parents.

Your child does not need to do anything after uploading their artwork. The drawing sits in their gallery. Every time someone buys a product made from it, they earn a royalty. And we donate.

Not once. Every time.

There is no expiration. No limit. As long as the drawing is in their gallery, it keeps working for them.

My daughter's stick figure has been in her gallery for over a year. She has never redrawn it, never updated it, never done a thing. But every time someone falls in love with that little figure holding a heart, she earns. And we give back.

That is what we mean when we say pixyit is good for them and good for other kids too.

There Are No Bad Drawings

If you had asked me which drawing would be our top seller, I would not have picked the stick figure.

I would have picked something more detailed. More colorful. More technically impressive.

I would have been wrong.

Zoey's "Love" outsells everything else. Not because it is complex, but because it is honest. Strangers connect with it immediately. They see something simple and true, and they want it in their home, their kitchen, their daily life.

This is something we have learned over and over: there are no bad drawings. Every child creates something worth keeping. Every piece has an audience somewhere. You cannot predict which one will resonate. That is the beauty of it.

We Are a For-Profit. Here Is Why That Matters.

pixyit is not a nonprofit. We are a for-profit company, and I believe that is the right structure for what we are trying to build.

Nonprofits do incredible work. But they depend on grants, donations, and goodwill to survive. When funding dries up, programs disappear. The kids they were helping are left behind.

We want to build something that lasts. A business that grows means more kids can earn royalties, more donations go to youth causes, more families can preserve what their children create. The mission only scales if the business scales.

Giving away a third of our profit is not charity. It is the model. It is how we are designed to work.
